Who We Are

                 We are Nayi - Brahmins

In India, the numerous castes and sub-castes are systematically arranged in a vertical hierarchical manner, so that each caste member known his position of superiority, or inferiority, in relation to all other caste members. One reason for the evolution of the system seems to have been to provide an effective division of labour. In early time each caste identified with a particular occupation and even today many people can be occupationally placed if their caste or sub-caste nomenclature is known. This means that names in India not only place the bearer regionally, and denotes his linguistic group, but also indicate his occupational background and his general social position. The Nayi-Brahmin community is listed as an Other Backward Class in various regions of India due to social, financial, educational, and/or political discrimination. In Andhra Pradesh Nayi – Brahmin community is classified as  BACKWARD CLASSES  in group A  as (Mangali), Mangala and Bajantri (synonyms were added vide G.O.Ms.No.1, BCW(M1) Dept., dt.6.1.1996) as under ……

ANDHRA PRADESH
LIST OF SOCIALLY AND EDUCATIONALLY BACKWARD CLASSES
(As per Report of Anantaraman Commission vide G.O.Ms.No.1793, Edn., dt.23.9.1970,
amended from time to time as on 09.3.2009)

GROUP-A

Mangala is Telugu name of barbers. Now a day’s barber renders his service all type of people and all caste people, not only urban even in rural also. The Mangalis called themselves as ‘Nayi Brahman’, and out of them some families are engaged in money lending. Only some families are carrying on the traditional calling and at the others two are exclusively moneylenders and agriculturists and do not do any haircutting.

According to Dravidian Encyclopedia (1993:467:vol. 2) Barbers are descendents of the son born of Brahma and a Sudra woman. They are considered as the descendents of Mangal mahamuni, created by the trinity, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva. Another tradition narrates that the first barber was created by Brahman from the lotus. Yet another legend mentions that Vasuki created the first barber from the navel of Siva. Because he was created from the ‘Nabhi’, he and his descendents are also called ‘Nayee/Nayi/Nai/Navi’/ Napik’.

Another Mangali who is not following his traditional calling is a panchayat RMP member. He was also engaged in the practice of medicine. He gives Herbal medicine, which he prepares himself. In those times, they have no shops where they cut the hair of their clients. They either goes to the house of the richer landowners of else cut hair under the shade of tree.

The Mangali women were the best midwives, who had perfected the method of making a woman's labout easy and bearable. They were experts in cutting the umbilical cord after delivery and cleaning the infant.

Bajantri plays a particular musical instrument called ‘Sanai” & “Dolu” at marriages.  At the sacred thread ceremony, the Bajantri is an important person.
